Le 5 juin 2024, 20 Colonels-majors issus de différents corps des Forces armées et de sécurité, sont nommés au grade de Général de brigade par le Président de la Transition. Parmi eux, 2 femmes : Nana Sangaré, de la Direction des transmissions, des télécommunications et de l’informatique des armées, et Nema Sagara, de l’Armée de l’air. Avec 8 officiers supérieurs promus, l’armée de terre s’est taillé la part du lion. Il s’agit des Colonels-majors Toumani Koné, Issa Ousmane Coulibaly, Abass Dembélé, Amara Doumbia, Mamadou Massaoulé Samaké, Moussa Yoro Kanté, Moussa Soumaré et Makan Alassane Marra.

Promus au grade de Général lors du Conseil des ministres du 16 octobre 2024, les nouveaux officiers généraux, parmi lesquels le Président de la transition et ses compagnons d’armes de l’ex-CNSP, ont reçu leurs attributs lors d’une cérémonie officielle tenue à Koulouba le 21 octobre. Plongée au cœur de la haute hiérarchie de l’armée malienne, où le cercle des Généraux s’accroît depuis la rectification de la transition il y a 3 ans.
Comme recommandé lors des conclusions du Dialogue Inter-Maliens pour la paix et la réconciliation nationale en mai dernier, les Colonels Assimi Goïta, Malick Diaw, Sadio Camara, Modibo Koné et le Colonel-major Ismaël Wagué, à l’origine du renversement du régime IBK en août 2020, viennent d’être élevés au grade de Général. Le Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga, qui ne faisait pas partie du CNSP mais est devenu au fil des années l’une des principales figures du régime de transition, a aussi été promu, portant à 6 le nombre de nouveaux généraux de l’armée malienne.
Du Général de brigade Abdoulaye Soumaré, 1er Général et 1er Chef d’état-major de l’armée en 1960, au Général d’armée Assimi Goïta en 2024, l’armée malienne a compté au moins 130 Généraux à divers échelons.
Avec sa promotion au grade de Général d’armée à titre exceptionnel, le Président de la Transition, Assimi Goïta, devient le militaire le plus haut gradé de l’armée malienne. Seuls les anciens Présidents Moussa Traoré et Amadou Toumani Touré avaient atteint ce grade.
Moussa Traoré avait été promu de Lieutenant à Général d’Armée en 1982, 14 ans après son coup d’État qui avait renversé le Président Modibo Keïta en 1968. Quant à Amadou Toumani Touré, il a été élevé du grade de Lieutenant-colonel à celui de Général d’armée en 1992 par le Président Alpha Oumar Konaré en guise de récompense pour sa bonne conduite de la transition de 1991.
